Dogecoin, the cryptocurrency that came into being from a joke meme, has topped $1 billion according to CoinMarketCap. Since the beginning of December it has risen over 400 percent despite no update to the coin in over two years. No doubt this is from Bitcoin being in the news nonstop as of late.

Altcoins of all sorts have benefited off Bitcoin’s fame with new users looking to stake a claim in the crypto world. While Bitcoin is the most well-known out of all cryptocurrencies, the high price tag it carries scares off many first time buyers who then seek a more affordable alternative. This leads them to instead invest in lower priced coins such as Doge and Ripple with the hope it will someday become the next big thing.
