Monero Infiltrates Google Chrome
A Tumblr extension offered by Google Chrome has been mining cryptocurrency through user’s PCs for the coin Monero. In what is being referred to as cryptojacking attacks, hackers use web servers and apps to mine cryptocurrency through unsuspecting user’s computers. The extension in question, “Archive Poster”, was updated on December 29, 2017 after the hack was discovered by developer Essence Labs.
While Essence Labs confirmed the breach on Twitter, Google has yet to make a statement about any wrongdoing concerning one of their popular extensions. Security researcher Troy Mursch is troubled by Google’s apparent lack of concern. “I don’t think Google is treating cryptojacking as a serious security issue,” Mursch told Fortune. “They have not come up with a plan of action to prevent it from happening in Chrome.”
